Forensic Odontology in Internet today

Some time ago I wrote about interesting web-sites in Oral Radiology and now the turn has come to Forensic Odontology. As you probably have noticed, Internet is a fast running lane, web-sites coming and going very fast.

If I try to compare the development of Oral Radiology and Forensic Odontology in Internet, I must say that it has been much faster in Oral Radiology. Perhaps this might be connected to the general development of this subject during the last years.

I knew before I started my search that it is rather few working institutes in Forensic Odontology around the world so if you want to now about Forensic Odontology/Dentistry in Internet, you probably have to visit many homepages for worldwide national Forensic Societies. In my computer I had some of these national homepages as bookmarks since earlier so I started from here.

My first finding then was that many of these had changed addresses, in some of them a link was supplied to the new one, but not in all. This is a rather common finding in Internet I today.

In Sweden and in Scandinavia interested people can find a meeting point in Forensic Odontology in www.odont.lu.se/depts/uciv/for-od.html
In this site we get a lot of information in general about FORENSIC ODONTOLOGY on the WWW.

For example links to many general sites, to an discussion list dealing with forensic aspects of anthropology, biology, chemistry, odontology, pathology, psychology, serology, toxicology, criminalistics. Also a link to the International Societies for Forensic Odonto-Stomatology (IOFOS) and the International Association for Forensic Sciences (IAFS).

Moreover addresses to some National Societies' and IOFOS Member Societies. Finally to some academic departments.

Let us continue to some of these national sites: If we go outside Scandinavia, we find one web-site in USA. A Society for interested dentist exist and the site can be found in www.asfo.org Here we can find info about their Society, some courses that they offer, info about Worldwide Forensic Resources on the Web, their Newsletter and Emergency Forensic Odontologists on Call.

The following can be read: The ASFO (American Society of Forensic Odontology) is the largest organization dedicated to the pursuit of forensic dentistry and liaison with other forensic disciplines. Membership is open to all individuals (non-dentists included) who have an interest in forensic Odontology. The ASFO publishes a newsletter three times a year. The annual meeting is held in conjunction with the AAFS (American Academy of Forensic Sciences) each year in February.

In US there is also another society called American Board of Forensic Odontology in the address www.abfo.org/

According to what is stated here the object of the Board is as follows :
The objective of the Board is to establish, enhance, and revise as necessary, standards of Qualifications for those who practice forensic odontology, and to certify as qualified specialists those voluntary applicants who comply with the requirements of the Board. In this way, the Board aims to make available a practical and equitable system for readily identifying those persons professing to be specialists in forensic odontology who possess the requisite qualifications and competence.

In www.bafo.org.uk/ we find the homepage of the British Association for Forensic Odontology.

The following information is given: You have arrived at the page on the Internet representing the British Association for Forensic Odontology. Please follow the links on the menu for the information you require.

The menu in the page includes a guide, FO references, FO meetings, FO textbooks, UK accredited Forensic Odontologists, BAFO Officers and some other links.

In the following homepage is the Australian Society. www.uq.edu.au/asfd/
Behind the "Forensic Dentistry on the Web" button, there is even a link to ODIS!

Finally I found a very interesting site in BOLD (Bureau of legal Dentistry)Web-site. North America's First Laboratory Dedicated Exclusively to Forensic Odontology. The address is www.boldlab.org/

BOLD is the only laboratory in North America dedicated to full-time, forensic odontology research and the application of scientific laboratory discoveries to legal cases for: Investigation, identification, litigation and Prosecution.

Anyone can here you can also participate in a Radiographic Identification Project! It is just to follow a link to enter the Lab and visit the "Study" link located on the left side of the page.
