Utrustning
En dental lågeffektslaser kan se ut på många sätt. Liksom härdningslamporna kan den vara endera liten och laddningsbar eller med en stor basenhet och försedd med en elkabel till en prob - med de för- och nackdelar som detta innebär. De vanligaste lasrarna i dagens läge är GaAlAs-lasrar med effekter mellan 100 och 500 mW. Denna våglängd är enkel att driva elektriskt och apparaterna kan därför göras små men ända kraftiga. Autoklaverbara spetsar för intraoralt bruk finns. Priser varierar mellan 30.000 och 60.000 kronor, plus moms. Det höga priset betingas delvis av små produktionsserier. I Norden finns sex firmor som tillverkar lågeffektslasrar, en i Sverige och fem i Danmark.

Konklusion
Laserterapi (LLLT) har praktiserats i över 30 år, men metoden är fortfarande kontroversiell. I takt med att mera kvalificerad forskning har publicerats, börjar bilden klarna och de positiva effekterna har i stor utsträckning verifierats. Dock krävs större uppmärksamhet på det faktum att goda behandlingsresultat förutsätter kunskaper i såväl medicin, fotobiologi och behandlingsteknik. Laserterapi är steril, smärtfri och så gott som utan biverkningar. Jämfört med många konventionella behandlingsmetoder är den kostnadseffektiv. Mera kvalificerad forskning behövs, men redan med dagens kunskaper kan laserterapi rekommenderas som en värdefull odontologisk modalitet.
